Book Review: Escape from Saddam

Escape From Saddam is a memoir by Lewis Alsamari of his journey to do just that…escape from Iraq. He had a long journey being smuggled out of Iraq and claimed asylum in England. He lives by the words of his Uncle Saad, “a genuine man never forgets his family.” But how could anyone forget their family if they knew they were being tortured? After becoming a UK citizen, he had to help his immediate family out of the country any way he could. This led to embezzling money and finding himself in jail. The title obviously reveals what the outcome of the book leads to, but Alsamari is able to create suspense for the reader throughout every chapter. My copy also included pictures of his forged documents and family members. It gave me a feeling that I really knew this author after all he’s been through.
